Job Description


Responsible for the delivery of spiritual care to patients/residents, their loved ones, and, as appropriate, staff. Responsible, as part of the interdisciplinary team, to ensure that religious/spiritual needs of patients/residents and their loved ones are met in the areas to which she/he is assigned.


 Gathers and evaluates relevant data pertinent to the patient's/resident’s situation and/or health and well-being.

 Develops and implements a plan of care to promote patient/resident well-being and continuity of care.

 Enters information into the patient's/resident’s record that is relevant to the patient's/resident’s medical, psycho-social and spiritual/religious goals of care.

 Actively and clearly collaborates with the organization's interdisciplinary care team, as well as area clergy / faith community leaders.

 Adheres to and seeks guidance for decision making and professional behavior from the code of ethics of the profession and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.

 Respects the confidentiality of information from all sources, including the patient/resident, the patient/resident record, other team members and family members, and abides by all applicable laws and regulations.

 Actively models and collaborates with the organization and its interdisciplinary team in respecting and providing culturally competent person-respected care.

 Provides timely and sensitive chaplaincy care to the organization's staff via individual and group interactions; the chaplain provides chaplaincy care to the organization in ways consonant with the Via Christi Health Mission, Core Values and strategic direction.

 Assumes responsibility for continued professional development, demonstrates a working and current knowledge of current theory and practice and integrates such information into practice.

 Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements


 Master’s Degree in Theology or closely related field (e.g., divinity, religious studies, pastoral ministry, pastoral studies, spirituality), preferred.

 Successful completion of two (2) units of Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalency, preferred


 Board Certified by and in good standing with a national certifying agency, preferred (e.g., The National Association of Catholic Chaplains, The Association of Professional Chaplains, or The National Association of Jewish Chaplains).

 If not board certified at time of hire, obtain board certification within a reasonable period of time (e.g., 3-5 years) as determined by the organization at the time of hire.
